Darzen Couples Money product guide: the overview showing who owes whom and shared spending

How to Split Shared Expenses Without Keeping Score

Product guide

One number, instead of a running tally in your head.

Most arguments about money are really arguments about bookkeeping. This keeps the bookkeeping in one place: every shared cost split by the rule you agreed on, every shared bill on a calendar, and a single figure for who owes whom. The Google Sheets copy is the one to share with your partner.

  • 3 editions: app, Google Sheets, Excel
  • $29 once, no subscription
  • Split 50/50, by income or your own %
  • Shareable in Google Sheets
  • No bank connection

What a shared expenses tracker has to do

Four things keep it fair without keeping score:

01

Applies the rule you agreed, every time

50/50, by income, or your own percentage — set once and applied to every cost, with the option to override a single one.

02

Reduces the month to one figure

Who owes whom, settled. No reconstructing a month of receipts.

03

Keeps shared bills on a shared calendar

Rent, utilities, insurance and subscriptions with due dates, marked paid, and exportable to the calendar you both use.

04

Gives the money conversation a place

Collect topics as they come up, then work through them on a monthly money date with a countdown — rather than at the worst possible moment.

Setting it up

One purchase gives you all three editions, so pick the one that suits how you work. You can use more than one; they do not sync with each other. For this one, the Google Sheets edition is the copy to share.

The app

Any modern browser. No install.

  1. Check your email for the Darzen username and password we send right after checkout.
  2. Sign in at account.darzenstore.com and open Darzen Couples Money.
  3. Download the app and open it in your browser.
  4. Sign in once. After that it works offline, on up to two devices.

Google Sheets

A free Google account.

  1. Sign in to your Darzen account and open the Google Sheets edition.
  2. Choose Make a copy. Your copy lands in your own Google Drive.
  3. Rename it if you like, then start on the first tab.

Excel

Excel 2010 or later, Mac or Windows, or Excel for the web. No macros.

  1. Sign in to your Darzen account and download the Excel workbook.
  2. You get two files: a blank copy, and an example copy already filled in.
  3. Open the example first to see how it behaves, then work in the blank one.

How to use it, screen by screen

The walkthrough follows the app; the spreadsheet editions carry the same tabs.

Agree the rule, then read one number

The overview shows who owes whom, what you spent together this month against last, each partner's share, and the next shared bill with its due date.

Add a cost in seconds

What, how much, who paid. The split follows your household rule, or you pick another rule for that one cost. Search, filter and export to CSV.

Every shared cost, split by the rule you set.

Put the shared bills on a calendar

Rent, utilities, insurance and subscriptions with the day they are due. Mark them paid, see the month at a glance, and add them to your own calendars with a reminder.

Save towards the same things

A trip, an emergency fund, a new couch. Each of you — or the joint account — adds money, and you see who put in what and what to set aside each month.

Who put in what, and what the goal still needs.

Hold a monthly money date

Collect topics through the month, then drag each from To talk about to Agreed to Done. The next date has a countdown and a calendar file.

Questions people ask first

Can we both use it at once?

The Google Sheets edition is the shareable one — make your copy and share it with your partner. The app runs on your own devices, up to two.

Does it move money between us?

No. It works out who owes whom; the transfer happens in your own banking app.

Does it connect to our banks?

No. You enter costs yourselves.

What if we split things differently?

Set the household rule to 50/50, by income or your own percentage, and override it on any single cost.

Is there a subscription?

No. It is one purchase of $29, and updates are free.

How do I get the files after I buy?

Right after checkout we email you a Darzen username and password. Sign in to your Darzen account to download the app and the Excel files, and to make your copy of the Google Sheets edition.

Settle the month, not the argument

One purchase, three editions, no subscription. Share the Sheet and start there.
